Faithful followers return for Knights’ Crab Feed - Mendocino Beacon

Faithful followers return for Knights’ Crab Feed - Mendocino Beacon

The St. Anthony Knights of Columbus held their annual Crab Feed at Crown Hall last Friday and Saturday night. Two hundred thirty tickets per night were available to the public, many of whom had come to the event for years. Rainy weather did not keep anyone away from meeting up with family and friends. The hall was packed with guests happily eating crab and asking for more.

Long tables sat in rows down the length of the historic hall. Mendocino High School students from the Interact Club served food, bussed tables and brought more plates. Bright lights were strung above the tables, giving the room the feel of an outdoor community picnic.

The kitchen and bar at the opposite ends of the room stayed busy. Soon the music entertainment of the evening would begin. In the meantime, people enjoyed themselves by wearing red crab hats with antennae that bounced whenever someone turned his head.

John Innes, a long-time Knight of Columbus, said it was the 44th year of the crab feed, which had begun long ago with 15 people in St. Anthony’s Church Hall on Lansing Street. Even running for two nights, the event outgrew the church hall. They moved it to Crown Hall and have been there since.

According to Innes, the Friday crab feed is generally bought out by the local community. Saturday night is when people from out of town can drive up for the weekend. He estimated that about 25 percent of Saturday’s crowd was from out-of-state.

As an example, he told the story of a just-married couple from South Lake Tahoe who, 10 years ago, called to ask if there was room for a wedding party of 58 people. The answer was yes. Every year the couple returns to the crab feed to celebrate their anniversary.

The Knights of Columbus fund a wide variety of charitable causes. Innes listed some: two Mendocino High School senior scholarships, senior citizens groups, the Hospitality House, the Mendocino Coast Children’s Fund, Parents and Friends, and the Food Bank.

Feeding about 450 people is a daunting task but also a labor of love. This long-time event gives support to local nonprofit agencies dedicated to providing the basics of everyday living for those who need it.
