OUTDOORS: Registration needed for crab traps - Sarasota Herald-Tribune

Anyone over the age of 16 is required to complete a no-cost blue crab trapping registration

Floridians possessing a saltwater recreational fishing license have been able to run up to five crab traps per licensee without any further documentation up until Jan. 1, 2020. It is now required for any one over the age of 16 to complete a no-cost blue crab trapping registration.

Each registrant will receive unique trap registration numbers to be permanently attached to each trap along with the owner’s full name and address. To register- go to GoOutdoorsFlorida.com.

For complete information on the new regulation and the one put into effect last October for stone crab traps, visit MyFWC.com/Marine. Click on recreational regulations and then blue crabs under the category crabs, shrimp and shellfish.

Public hearing for offshore aquaculture enterprise

Some of my readers may or may not be aware of the plans by an aquaculture enterprise out of Hawaii that has plans to establish an open water fish propagation facility in the Gulf of Mexico approximately 45 miles southwest of Sarasota. The plan is to raise almaco jacks, a fairly fast growing and highly edible food fish in large pens suspended in the Gulf. Almaco jacks are similar to lesser amberjack and banded rudderfish.

There is some concern, and rightly so, that some of the food and the additives used to prevent any diseases inherent with raising large volumes of fish used in this industry, may have a negative effect on our wild native species. There is also some concern as to the volume of waste emanating from these large pens and the possibility of that waste feeding red tide blooms which could spread from a point source such as this.

I am not a scientist and do not pretend to be one, but I do feel there are legitimate questions to be asked. On Jan. 28, a public hearing is scheduled at Mote's WAVE Center,1600 Ken Thompson Pkwy., Sarasota by the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) in association with a permit application by Kampachi Farms LLC (Hawaii). The permit application is for the net pen aquaculture facility described above.

All interested parties are encouraged to attend. If you plan to speak: pre-register at https://projects.erg.com/conferences/npdes/register-publichearing.html.
